abstract
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the quality and adequacy of the alternative blood type diet proposed by Orthomolecular Therapy and to compare it to the norms proposed by the Science of Nutrition. The methodology used was the application of prospective alimentary inquiry for three days among nineteen practitioners following this diet who were subsequently evaluated by the Healthy Eating Index method. Punctuations for food consumption and components of a healthy diet were used in conform to recommendations from the Food Pyramid Guide and were organized by groups and number of portions in accordance with Dietary Reference Intake recommendations. The results demonstrated that 84.2% of the diets are in the "diet need modifications" category, 15.8% in the "inadequate or poor diet" category and none in the "healthy diet" category. It can therefore be concluded that this diet does not serve as a standard for a healthy diet according to the recommendations of admittedly valid health agencies.
