Dietary knowledge on acute diarrhea in children

Resumo
O estudo teve como objetivo identificar as práticas alimentares promovidas por mães de crianças menores de 5 anos com diarreia aguda. Estudo exploratório e descritivo, com 30 mães e respectivas crianças. A maioria das crianças estava eutrófica e 43,3% receberam leite materno exclusivo até seis meses. Predominaram as mães agricultoras, com idade entre 19-30 anos, pouca escolaridade e renda familiar mensal de até um salário mínimo. A alimentação foi referida como principal causa da diarreia (43,2%) e mais importante no tratamento (90%). Os alimentos evitados eram a carne de porco, laranja, mamão, iogurte e farinha de milho. Os alimentos ofertados foram goiaba, banana, arroz, água de coco e cenoura. O chá mais ofertado foi o de Boldo. Concluí-se que, mesmo em condições socioeconômicas, culturais, sanitárias e de aleitamento desfavoráveis, as mães demonstraram conhecimento e boas práticas no tratamento, promovendo um hábito alimentar rico em nutrientes e fitoquímicos.
Abstract
This study aimed to identify dietary practices promoted by mothers of children under 5 years of age with acute diarrhea. Is an exploratory study and descriptive, with 30 mothers and their children. Most children were well nourished and 43.3% received exclusive breastfeeding up to six months. Predominated by agricultural worker mothers 19-30 years of age, little schooling, and family income up to minimum wage. Diet was reported as the main cause of diarrhea (43.2%) and most important in the treatment (90.0%). the avoided foods were pork, orange, papaya, yogurt and corn flour. The foods offered were guava, banana, rice, coconut water, carrot. Bilberry tea was mostly offered. It is conclude that even in conditions of; socioeconomic, cultural, health and poor breastfeeding, the mother’s demonstrated knowledge and good practices in the treatment, promoting a dietary habit rich in nutrients and phytochemicals.
