Abstract: human milk is the best food for the infant. Besides the short term, well-recognized benefits as prevention of infections and promotion of the infant immune system, observational studies have suggested that breastfeeding reduces the risk of development of obesity in childhood and in adulthood. However, these findings present some controversy, making it uncertain whether the reduction in the risk of obesity is a direct effect of breastfeeding or of the many maternal variables associated with it, such as BMI, socioeconomic status, level of education and ethnicity. To answer these questions, it is necessary to go beyond the observational studies and investigate how human milk components act on the physiology of the infant. In this review will be discussed some of the potential mechanisms by which human milk and breastfeeding may influence the risk of obesity development.
