Characterization and Evaluation of the Quality of the Websites that Relate Medicinal Plants and Phytotherapy to Weigh Loss.

RESUMO

A obesidade é uma doença crônica que cresce em todo o mundo, com isso, a busca por alternativas de tratamento e prevenção, com ênfase nas plantas medicinais, tem aumentado devido ao fácil acesso e poucos efeitos colaterais. O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar e avaliar a qualidade dos websites que relacionam fitoterapia ao emagrecimento. Foram coletados dados utilizando a ferramenta de pesquisa Google® considerando as palavras “fitoterapia”, “planta medicinal” e “emagrecimento”. Os websites foram investigados considerando: presença de profissional de saúde responsável; toxicidade; presença de reações adversas; referências bibliográficas e vínculo com instituição de pesquisa. Os resultados demonstraram que a maioria não apresentava informações que conferissem credibilidade ao seu conteúdo. Os fitoterápicos mais citados foram o chá verde (Camellia sinensis) e o gengibre (Zingiber officinale). Concluiu-se que, apesar de a internet ser um meio de busca prático e de fácil acesso nem sempre traz as informações seguras a população.  

ABSTRACT

Obesity is a chronic disease that grows all over the world, thereby, the search for treatment alternatives and prevention, with emphasis on medicinal plants, has increased due its easy access and few side effects. The objective of this work was to characterize and evaluate the quality of the websites that relate phytotherapy to weight loss. Data were collected using Google® search tool considering the words "phytotherapy", "medicinal plant" and "weight loss". The websites were investigated considering: the presence of a responsible health professional; toxicity; presence of adverse reactions; bibliographic references and link with a research institution. The results showed that most of it didn’t present information that would give credibility to its content. The most mentioned herbal medicines were green tea (Camellia sinensis) and ginger (Zingiber officinale). It was concluded that, although the Internet is a practical and accessible search tool, it doesn’t always bring safe information to the population.
