resumo
A obesidade e a consequente resistência insulínica vêm crescendo mundialmente.
abstract
Obesity and the consequent insulin resistance are growing worldwide. As the literature suggests that dietary fat may alter the sensitivity to this hormone, this study aims to determine the effect of the n-3 fatty acid supplementation in insulin resistance. This is a literature review of the last ten years. After a brief explanation about the mechanism of insulin resistance and the n-3 essential fatty acid family, the actions of this fatty acid on glucosis homeostasis in different populations will be discussed: subjects overweighted and non-diabetic; with type 2 diabetes mellitus and animals. The results show no consensus on the dose nor on the duration of the supplementation of omega-3 necessary to increase insulin sensitivity. The most studied source of n-3 was fish oil. The most effective results were the experimentals ones, and probably some variables of the human studies should be more controlled.
