abstract
In recent years increasing attention has been given to various elements involved in the regulation of energy balance. Among these elements stands out ghrelin. Ghrelin was recently identified and it is a peptide hormone involved in the control of appetite and energy homeostasis. Acylation of ghrelin is essential for the regulation of appetite. Food intake alters energy homeostasis by generating a positive energy balance. Postprandial changes in plasma ghrelin appear to be dependent on the macronutrient composition of the meal. Moreover, physical activity is a factor that influences body weight maintenance, because it leads to a negative energy balance by increasing energy expenditure. Total ghrelin does not seem to change after short duration aerobic and strength exercises, while acylated ghrelin shows a decrease. Long-term exercises seem to lead to increased levels of total ghrelin by inducing weight loss.
