Parents’ knowledge about the relationship between honey and infant botulism.

RESUMO

Este estudo teve como objetivo verificar o conhecimento dos pais sobre a relação entre o mel e o botulismo infantil. Foi elaborado um estudo quantitativo que teve como base a construção de um questionário, que foi aplicado a 50 pais/responsáveis antes do horário de atendimento pediátrico no posto de saúde Navegantes, pertencente à Prefeitura Municipal de Porto Alegre/RS. A análise estatística foi realizada por meio de tabelas, gráficos, medidas de posição e variabilidade. Participaram deste estudo 50 pais/responsáveis, com filhos com idade de zero a cinco anos. Verificou-se que 86% dos pais/responsáveis desconhecem a doença botulismo infantil, 76% não sabem que o mel pode veicular alguma doença e 52% dos pais oferecem ou já ofereceram mel a seu filho. No momento da pesquisa, 32% ainda ofereciam mel para seu filho. Verificou-se que a introdução do mel na alimentação da criança se dá, em média, aos 8 meses de idade.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to verify the parents' knowledge about the relationship between honey and infant botulism. It was elaborated a quantitative study which was based on the construction of a questionnaire that was administered to 50 parents / responsible before the time of pediatric care in the Dispensary Navegantes, belonging to the Municipality of Porto Alegre/RS. Statistical analysis was performed using tables, graphs, measures of location and variability. Participated a total of 50 parents / responsible with children aged zero to five years. It was found that 86% of parents / responsible are unaware of the Infant Botulism disease, 76% do not know that honey may carry a disease and 52% of parents offer or have offered honey to his son. At the time of the survey 32% still offered honey to their children. It was found that the introduction of honey feeding the child is, on average, at 8.25 months of age.
